Patricia's Journal

Meet Patricia, a 55-year-old woman who has been managing incontinence for the past 12 years, as she shares her day-to-day experiences with incontinence.

June, Entry One

The Scouting motto of "be prepared" also applies to coping with incontinence when I am away from the comforts and conveniences of home. Being caught away from home without adequate supplies can be a real problem.

I walk at the mall as part of my weight-battling plan, but doing so requires six product changes plus a complete change of clothing. Walking creates thirst, and a bottle of cool water quenches that thirst. It also floods my incontinence protection, which can cause embarrassment. In no time I exhaust the meager supply from my purse.

"Be prepared" comes to my rescue as I realize that an even larger bag/purse is required. A sling bag solves my problem of space to carry supplies. I learn to go a step further by packing a large backpack with a change of clothing plus extra incontinence supplies, including clean-up items. The large backpack is stowed out of sight in my car. Whenever the sling bag/purse runs out of supplies, I find an excuse to visit my car and reload from the stowed backpack. This method works so well that I use the principles of the plan daily.

Time flies by and the incontinence level increases. With a bit of research on the Internet, I discover that an assortment of Internet stores specialize in selling incontinence supplies. Most of the stores offer a trial package. Usually a trial package includes a variety of styles for a specified type of absorbent product. Ordering trial packages from three different stores provides me with a large array of product to try. The first group of products includes various styles of undergarments. The next batch of trial packages includes disposable absorbent underwear in various styles and fits. I also experiment with extra absorbing pads to use inside the disposable underwear. I finally locate the right combination for my type and level of incontinence.

By being prepared whenever I leave the house, I travel with ease and peace. Little did I know how useful Scouting would be in learning how to cope with incontinence.

Until next time,
